Well, I'm lucky to be here rather than where they wanted to put me. But I miss being out and around, and I miss people.

I had a wonderful wife. We were together for 71 years. She passed away on January 1, 2018. That was the biggest blow I've ever had… because I have nobody. Nobody to yell at me.

I'll tell you my two good stories. I lived in the hills above Sunset Boulevard near Laurel Canyon. Most people know where this famous hotel to the Hollywood stars was, just two or three blocks west of Laurel Canyon on the Boulevard, called The Chateau Marmont. Oh yes. And I was just a boy. We had moved up the hill. I went to Hollywood High, which was three miles east. And I walked to school every day. Going downhill was easy, but it was a long walk. The garage to The Chateau Marmont was right at Sunset Boulevard, at the bottom of the hill. And I'm standing there out of breath, and I did something my parents told me never to do: hitchhike. And here comes a 1941 blue Cadillac convertible. And I went like this [thumb out] and the guy went like this [beckons]. It was John Wayne. John Wayne took me to Hollywood High about four or five times. I was the coolest kid in town.

My other story is about Heddy Lamar. You’ve probably never heard of her. But now I’ve forgotten what I was going to say. I lose my thoughts. It’s hard for me to keep on.
